چکیده

Location-based social networking services are becoming increasingly popular among the multitude of mobile applications. The new location sharing functionalities made possible by GPS-based mobile phones, however, also raise two main privacy issues: users are typically limited to a only few built-in options that do not support fine-granular or even changing privacy preferences, and location data are often implicitly shared with service providers in the process. This paper argues for a new groupbased architecture for privacy-aware location sharing, developed starting from a use-case analysis of sharing patterns and a brief review of existing privacy options in today’s popular location-sharing applications. This is complemented by a stakeholder discussion with a view towards identifying the various location privacy threats. Based on this analysis, we present a decentralized architecture for location sharing, based on the popular XMPP instant messaging platform, which supports sharing location information at different granularities directly with different sets of contcts. This gives more flexibility to users in terms of sharing patterns, thus providing more privacy as users can decide in detail what kind of location data to share with whom. The system also avoid the central disclosure of all user location data to the service provider, by either employing private servers or relying on end-to-end encryption between contacts.

A Context-aware Architecture for Mental Model Sharing through Semantic Movement in Intelligent Agents

Recent studies in multi-agent systems are paying increasingly more attention to the paradigm of designing intelligent agents with human inspired concepts. One of the main cognitive concepts driving the core of many recent approaches in multi agent systems is shared mental models. In this paper, we propose an architecture for sharing mental models based on a new concept called semantic movement....

Friends Radar: Towards a Private P2P Location Sharing Platform

In this paper, we propose a new approach to live location sharing among a group of friends that does not rely on a central server as a hub for exchanging locations messages, but is done in a peer-topeer manner by pushing selective location updates via XMPP messages. That is, only those contacts speci cally authorized by users will be noti ed of location changes via push messages, but no third-p...

Path Privacy in Location-aware Computing

Context-aware applications often require sharing private data with a service provider. Most contextual information, such as location, changes over time. Privacy mechanisms that can safeguard information when shared with less trusted organizations, however, remain more suitable for static or point-in-time information. We make the case for developing privacy mechanisms that adequately address tim...
